Green Doors and Windows

Glass & Frames

What actually makes a window perform.

Glass packages, coatings, gas fills and frame depths determine energy efficiency, comfort and noise. Here's a plain-language walkthrough.

Glazing Options

The glass package.

Double vs Triple Glazing

Double glazing uses two panes of glass separated by a sealed gas-filled cavity. Triple glazing adds a third pane and a second cavity — improving insulation and typically reducing noise transfer. Triple glazing is available on many but not all configurations; sizing and structural limits are confirmed at quotation.

Low-E Coatings

Low-emissivity (low-E) coatings are microscopically thin metallic layers applied to the glass surface. They reflect long-wave heat back into the room in winter and reject solar heat gain in summer — meaningfully improving comfort near the window and reducing energy loss.

Argon Gas Fill

The cavity between panes is filled with argon, a colourless inert gas that conducts heat more slowly than dry air. Combined with low-E coatings, argon fill is a standard upgrade for energy-efficient residential windows.

Warm-Edge Spacers

The spacer holds the panes of glass apart and seals the gas fill. Warm-edge spacers use lower-conductivity materials to reduce heat transfer at the glass perimeter — which reduces condensation risk in cold weather.

Tempered Safety Glass

Tempered glass is heat-treated to be several times stronger than standard glass; if it does break, it fractures into small blunt pieces. Building codes require tempered glass in specific locations — for example near doors, in tubs and showers, and close to the floor.

Privacy & Obscure Patterns

Frosted, textured and decorative patterns diffuse light and block clear view while still admitting daylight — a common choice for bathrooms, front-door sidelites and any opening facing a neighbour.

Frame Systems

Four frame systems.

Frame depth determines which wall assemblies a window can fit — and which operable styles are available. Every project is quoted with the system that matches the opening.

3¼" Frame Vinyl Window System frame profile
